Workshop Notes — Shimano Deore 2-Piston (BR-M6100 / BR-M615 / BR-T6000)

  • Narrow pad / wide rotor mismatch: These brakes use Shimano “narrow type” pads (G/J shapes). If you run older wide-track rotors, pads can form a wear “lip” and braking fades even with material left. Match rotors to the correct brake track.
  • Sudden squeal + loss of power: Often contamination. If mineral oil weeps past piston seals it will soak the pads — replace the piston seals and clean/deglaze the rotor before bedding in new pads.
  • Rotor rub / uneven wear: Usually sticky pistons from winter grit and brake dust. Push pistons out slightly, clean the sides, then lubricate with a tiny amount of mineral oil so all pistons retract evenly.
  • Bleed port thread care: Caliper bleed screws are small and easy to cross-thread. Start by hand, use correct tool, and don’t over-tighten.
  • Bite point changes under extreme heat: Rare in normal trail/commuting use, but long steep descents or bike-park laps can push fluid temps up. A fresh bleed and correct bed-in helps.
