Gorilla Brakes Carbon Compound

Freinage raffiné. Fonctionnement silencieux.

I bought a set of these pads for my summer bike and they were so good I've bought another set for my winter bike! I had glazed my Shimano brake pads and no amount of sanding would bring them back to normal. They felt Woody and lacked any stopping power. Switching to these gorilla pads has returned the performance to the best it's ever been and the lever feel is amazing!

Hi Mark, we're thrilled to hear how much you love the Gorilla Brakes! Thanks for trusting us for both your summer and winter rides. Happy cycling!

So far, so good. I ordered these be a use my existing Shimano pads had a terrible squeal that I couldn’t get rid of. The new brake pads stop well without the squeal.

Hi John, we're glad to hear the new brake pads are working well for you and eliminating that squeal! Thanks for sharing your experience with Gorilla Brakes.

Great at not fading, but they’re absurdly loud, whether cold, warm, or hot. This is with new brake discs and I followed the break-in directions. I’ve used semi-metallic brake pads before that were not even nearly this loud. Maybe 25%, and only if the discs got hot. It was useful for the race to let people know where I am from 1 km away (seriously), but I have to take then off for regular riding because it’s obnoxious.

Hi David,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, and we’re pleased to hear the pads delivered the fade resistance you were looking for.

The noise, however, isn’t something we’d expect to be caused by the brake pads alone. Brake squeal is almost always the result of vibration resonance somewhere in the braking system. Even with brand new rotors and a correct bedding-in procedure, factors such as caliper alignment, piston movement, rotor design, brake fluid condition, or the interaction between a very hard metallic compound and certain brake systems can create significant noise.

Some brake and rotor combinations are much more sensitive than others. We’ve recently developed new compounds specifically because we found certain brake systems perform better with a slightly different friction material while still maintaining excellent power and heat management.

Please get in touch with us directly. We’d be more than happy to help diagnose the issue and, if your brake setup would benefit from a different compound, we’ll happily exchange the pads or arrange a refund, even if they’ve been used. We stand behind our products and want you to have brakes that are both powerful and quiet.

Now, whether I’m an idiot or not I can’t be sure; I ride a Cannondale Topstone Carbon with Shimano GRX400 brakes. Is it me but those pads are not compatible with those brakes (‘was sure they’re listed as such).

The pads are in contact with the rotor (pistons are fully retracted).

Hi James,

Sorry you’re having trouble with the fitment.

We have tried to give you a call so we could talk this through properly, but we haven’t been able to reach you yet.

You have purchased the Gorilla Brakes NRS ONE pads. On these pads, the spring is built in as one piece,

If the pads are sitting in contact with the rotor, the spring may need opening up slightly before fitting. This adds more tension and helps the pads sit back from the rotor correctly.

Please remove the pads and gently open the spring section out a little, then refit them and centre the caliper over the rotor.

GRX brakes can also suffer from corrosion or build-up around the pistons, so it is worth checking that both pistons are moving freely and returning evenly.

give our workshop a call on 0800 772 0937 and we’ll talk you through it.

Kind regards,
Lee

The standard ultegra brake pads were good, the new Gorilla pads are definitely an immediate upgrade. Still bedding in, been through a couple of really wet weeks and never felt like I didn't have brakes

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

These are L / K-Type pads designed to replace Shimano K05S, L05A, and L03A. They fit most Shimano 2-piston flat-mount road and gravel systems including GRX, 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace. If you’re unsure, just message us and we’ll confirm.

Standard resin pads work well at low temperatures but can fade when pushed harder. The carbon-reinforced compound improves heat stability, giving more consistent braking on longer descents with a smoother feel.

Yes — this is one of our quietest compounds. When properly bedded in and the system is set up correctly, they run very quietly. Noise is usually caused by setup issues rather than the pad itself.

They take slightly longer than standard resin pads. We recommend 15–20 controlled stops from speed to build a proper transfer layer. Once bedded in, performance becomes consistent and stable.

They perform best in dry and mixed conditions. In heavy rain or mud, braking performance will be lower than sintered pads. For regular wet riding, we’d recommend Sintered or Enduro Pro compounds.

Brake power comes from the brake system itself (caliper, pistons, fluid, rotor size). Pads control how that power is delivered. These improve modulation and consistency rather than just adding aggressive bite.

Yes — they are suitable for e-road and e-gravel bikes. The carbon compound handles the extra load better than standard resin pads. For full-power e-MTB use, a more aggressive compound is recommended.

No — they are rotor-friendly. The softer carbon-resin compound reduces rotor wear compared to harder metallic pads.

Noise is usually caused by setup issues, not the pad itself. Common causes include contamination, uneven piston movement, poor alignment, or incomplete bedding-in. Once the system is clean and properly set up, these pads run quietly.

These are ideal for road, gravel, commuting, and general riding where you want smooth, quiet, and predictable braking. For aggressive riding, downhill, or alpine descents, we recommend Enduro Pro or Sintered compounds.
