Workshop Notes — Shimano B-Type (B01S / B03S / B05S / E01S / M05)

  • Best use: everyday MTB, commuting, leisure rides and mixed terrain. Common on Shimano MT200/MT400 style 2-piston brakes.
  • Noise issues: squeal is usually rotor contamination (chain lube, cleaners) or pistons not retracting evenly. Clean rotors with isopropyl alcohol and re-centre the caliper.
  • Rubbing after a pad change: dirty pistons or an overfilled system can prevent pistons returning fully. Push pistons back evenly, clean piston edges, then re-align the caliper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Shimano B01S, B03S, B05S, E01S and M05 brake pads interchangeable
Yes. Shimano B01S, B03S, B05S, E01S and M05 share the same B-Type pad shape and fit the same compatible calipers. The difference is the compound material and generation, not the physical shape. Always check your caliper model to confirm compatibility.
Do these brake pads fit Shimano MT200 and MT400 brakes
Yes. Shimano B-Type pads (B01S, B03S, B05S, E01S and M05) are compatible with popular Shimano 2-piston systems including BR-MT200, BR-MT400, BR-M315, BR-M365, BR-M395 and many more entry-level MTB and trekking brakes.
What compound is best for Shimano B-Type brakes?
For everyday riding and commuting, semi-metallic or ceramic compounds offer balanced performance and low noise. For wet winter riding or heavier riders, sintered (metallic) pads provide better durability and fade resistance. Choosing the right compound depends on riding style, terrain and braking load.
