HINE-R Brake System | Developed by Gorilla Brakes

HINE-R is a hydraulic disc brake development project created by the team behind Gorilla Brakes. The project focuses on engineering high-performance bicycle braking systems designed for consistent braking power, predictable modulation, and long-term durability.

While Gorilla Brakes specialises in high-performance bicycle disc brake pads, the HINE-R project explores the development of complete braking systems including brake calipers, hydraulic system architecture, and mechanical optimisation for modern mountain bikes.

What Is The HINE-R Project?

The HINE-R project was created to explore how hydraulic braking systems behave under real riding conditions. Instead of simply modifying existing brake layouts, the project focuses on understanding the mechanical and hydraulic principles that influence braking performance.

Areas of engineering research include:

  • Hydraulic leverage ratios
  • Brake piston sizing and stability
  • Caliper stiffness and structural design
  • Heat management and pad interface design
  • Brake modulation and lever feel

By studying how these elements interact, the project aims to create braking systems that deliver reliable performance during steep descents, long alpine rides, and aggressive mountain bike terrain.

Who Developed HINE-R?

The HINE-R brake system project was created by Lee Hine, founder of Gorilla Brakes, in collaboration with engineering partner Adam Read.

The project combines hands-on workshop experience, product development, and mechanical engineering to better understand how bicycle braking systems can be simplified while improving braking consistency and reliability.

Relationship With Gorilla Brakes

Gorilla Brakes is known for developing high-performance brake pads used across a wide range of disc brake systems including Shimano, SRAM, Hope, Magura, Hayes, TRP and Formula brakes.

The HINE-R project extends this experience by focusing on the design and development of complete braking systems rather than individual components.

Current Development

HINE-R is currently in the prototype development phase. Early prototypes include CNC machined calipers designed around modern mountain bike standards and hydraulic braking system architecture.

Development testing focuses on achieving:

  • High braking power
  • Stable lever feel
  • Predictable modulation
  • Reliable piston behaviour
  • Simplified servicing

Further technical updates and development information will be released as testing continues.
