Gorilla Brakes / Compound comparison
Find the right brake pad compound for your bike and the way you ride. Compare our three ranges, explore each compound’s strengths and choose the braking feel, performance and longevity that suit you.
At Gorilla Brakes, we carry out both real world riding tests and controlled dyno testing to understand how our brake pads perform. Our dyno testing uses a rig built by Adam Read of Hine-R Engineering at his workshop in Darwen, Lancashire. Dyno testing lets us compare braking performance and temperature behaviour, while real world riding helps us assess braking feel, consistency and wear in everyday and demanding conditions. Together, they guide our compound development and help us recommend the right pads for your riding.
Our development is ongoing. We continually test, refine our compounds and add new performance data as our products evolve. A compound tested three years ago may have been updated since, so dated results reflect the version tested at that time. This commitment to continuous improvement helps us keep developing the performance, feel and longevity of our brake pads.

About this test
This chart compares braking power for bedded-in pads. The horizontal axis shows rotor temperature (°C); the vertical axis shows braking power (W). Each curve represents the compound and test setup named in the compound selector. Compare curves within their plotted ranges; no result is shown beyond the end of a curve.
Every curve shown was tested with the Shimano XT RT86 rotor, including the aluminium-backed Enduro Pro Ultimate and competitor pads. Compare the compounds and backing-plate configurations named in the selector within their plotted temperature ranges.
Why some curves stop earlier
Each test run stopped when the measured caliper temperature reached 120°C, the stopping threshold used to protect the piston seals in this test setup. The horizontal axis shows rotor temperature. Sintered’s shorter curve means the caliper reached the limit at a lower rotor temperature.
Preparing the pads: thermal conditioning and green fade
The comparison above shows bedded in pads. During our initial conditioning tests, we observed green fade in fresh compounds, followed by braking power building with heat in subsequent runs.
As a fresh resin bound compound heats up, residual volatile ingredients can release gases as the material thermally conditions and undergoes further curing. This can temporarily reduce friction between the pad and rotor. Completing the recommended bedding in procedure helps condition the compound and establish an even transfer layer on the rotor, preparing the pads for demanding riding.
“Green” refers to fresh friction material, rather than the Factory Racing Green product name. Follow the bedding in instructions for your specific pads.
Explore Enduro Pro Ultimate Orange’s backing plate options
The aluminium backing plate offers a lighter weight option. The steel backed Enduro Pro Ultimate Orange sample maintains a cooler caliper at comparable rotor temperatures in this test. Each backing plate brings its own benefit: aluminium for weight saving, and steel for the caliper temperature performance shown below.

Factory Racing offers different braking feels and backing plate options. Performance compounds offer everyday value for commuters and leisure riders on conventional bikes.
Which compounds do you recommend for electric bikes and heavy cargo bikes?
We recommend Enduro Pro Ultimate Orange and Enduro Pro Semi Metallic Blue for electric bikes, heavy cargo bikes and electric cargo bikes. They are also our choices for family transport, delivery riding and loaded touring. Match the pad fitment and complete brake setup to your bike and its total load.
Which brake pads should I choose for long descents?
Explore Enduro Pro Ultimate Orange for strong braking performance and longevity, or Enduro Pro Semi Metallic Blue for versatile braking and the heat management performance shown in our tests. These are our recommended compounds for prolonged alpine descents, demanding electric mountain bike riding and loaded touring.
Which compound suits wet weather commuting and winter riding?
Sintered is our go to Performance compound for wet and muddy rides. Strong wet weather braking and durable performance make it a great choice for rainy commutes and winter riding. Sintered pads generate a lot of heat, which can transfer to the caliper faster than with other compounds in our range. For high-heat applications, Gorilla Brakes recommends the Enduro Pro and Factory Racing compounds.
What is the difference between Factory Racing Stealth Purple and Factory Racing Titanium?
Factory Racing Stealth Purple and Factory Racing Titanium share the same tested compound profile and braking feel. Factory Racing Stealth Purple uses a steel backing plate; Factory Racing Titanium offers a lighter titanium backing plate. Weight saving is the main benefit of the titanium option.
What is the benefit of an aluminium backing plate?
The aluminium backing plate option for Enduro Pro Ultimate Orange offers a lighter setup. Our comparison graph shows how the tested steel and aluminium configurations behave as rotor temperature rises, helping you choose the combination that suits your priorities.
How do you test Gorilla Brakes compounds?
We combine real world riding with controlled dyno testing on a rig built by Adam Read of Hine-R Engineering at his workshop in Darwen, Lancashire. We assess braking power, temperature behaviour, braking feel and wear, and continually refine our compounds as new findings become available.
Do new brake pads need bedding in?
Yes. Follow the bedding in instructions for your specific pads to condition the compound and establish an even transfer layer on the rotor. In our initial conditioning tests, we observed green fade in fresh compounds, followed by braking power building with heat in subsequent runs. The graphs show the tested configurations; use the recommended bedding in procedure for your pads.
Inside our dyno testing
The whole braking system makes a difference.
Our development work explores the pad, backing plate and rotor together. These tests show how repeat runs, rotor choice and compound selection influence braking power and temperature behaviour.
Repeat testing: preparing the compound for performance
Four HEL rotor runs with titanium backed pads show how braking performance changes across successive tests. Later runs deliver stronger output at the cooler end and around 250°C than the first run, supporting our observations of improved performance after initial conditioning.
