Hayes began life in 1946 as a manufacturing company producing brake components for a variety of heavy industry uses. In 1972, the American company entered the bicycle manufacture industry by creating and manufacturing the first disc brake for Schwinn. With a long background as an industrial brake manufacturer for areas such as agricultural machinery, motorcycles and construction machinery, they were able to bring that knowledge to the cycling arena. In 1996, they created their own hydraulic disc brake system especially for mountain biking.
