Blackline MTB Trail Jacket Review , Warm Without the Bulk

I’ll be honest from the start: I’m always cold. The kind of cold where I end up wearing about ten layers, feel restricted, and somehow still manage to be cold… then too hot. It’s bulky, uncomfortable, and honestly just gets in the way of enjoying a ride.

That’s exactly why I decided to try the Blackline Clothing MTB Trail Jacket (3-Layer) — and I’m really glad I did.

First Ride Impressions

I first wore the jacket on a Friday evening ride. To be fair, it wasn’t as cold as it could have been — but that almost doesn’t matter, because I’m cold regardless of conditions.

I wore a base layer, my jersey, and the jacket (anyone who knows me knows that in winter I usually have about ten layers on).

And that was it. No extra layers. No bulk. No restriction.

I wasn’t too hot, I wasn’t cold — just comfortable. That balance is something I really struggle to find, especially with jackets that either feel like a bin bag or turn into a sauna halfway through the ride.

Warmth Without Feeling Bulky

The biggest win for me is how the jacket keeps you warm without feeling bulky. It doesn’t restrict movement, it doesn’t flap about, and it doesn’t feel like you’re riding in full winter armour.

When I’m riding, the main thing for me is being able to move properly, ride naturally, and forget about what I’m wearing. Feeling comfortable overall is exactly how good kit should feel — and that’s what this jacket delivers.

Fit & Sizing

For anyone wondering about sizing, here’s what worked for me.

I’m 5ft 2, around 9 stone, and female. I went for a medium and the fit is spot on. It layers perfectly over a base layer and jersey without feeling tight or bulky, and there’s a side zip which makes it really easy to get on and off.

Price vs Performance

What impressed me even more is the price. For a 3-layer MTB jacket, it’s very reasonable.

After speaking to Blackline, I found out they’re planning a more premium range in the future — but honestly, this jacket already feels like it punches well above its price point.

It feels like properly thought-out kit, not something built just to hit a price target.

Customer Service That Actually Cares

I also ordered a pair of trousers at the same time, but they came up a bit big. The return process itself was straightforward, but what really stood out was how helpful Blackline were.

Alex from Blackline sent out a smaller pair to try before I’d even returned the originals. If the smaller size didn’t fit, I could send both back together — which took all the stress out of it.

The returns process deserves a proper mention too. Once I knew the smaller size was right, returning the others was simple. Blackline sent a QR code and I could just drop the return into an InPost locker. No printing labels, no hassle.

Little things like that make a big difference, especially when buying clothes online. It really shows they care about customers — not just orders.

Supporting UK Trails (This Bit Matters)

One thing that really deserves a shout is that Blackline donate 10% of their profits to free-to-ride trails in the UK.

They’re currently partnered with three trails, and as they grow, they’re looking to support even more — giving back to the trails we all ride.

“We donate 10% of our profits to free-to-ride trails in the UK. We’re currently partnered with three trails, and as we continue to grow, we’re looking to support even more. Giving back to the trails we all ride is a core part of what Blackline is about.”

Final Verdict

If you’re someone who:

  • Gets cold easily
  • Hates bulky winter layers
  • Wants practical, well-priced MTB kit
  • Likes supporting brands that give back

Then the Blackline MTB Trail Jacket is absolutely worth a look.

It’s warm without being heavy, comfortable without being restrictive, and backed up by genuinely good customer service. I went in hoping it would help — and came away properly impressed.
