Workshop Notes — Shimano SLX 2-Piston (BR-M7100 / BR-M7000)

  • Noise & squeal: Most noise is contamination (cleaners, chain lube) or uneven piston retraction. Clean the rotor, re-centre the caliper and bed pads in properly.
  • Rotor rub / uneven wear: Usually one piston is “lazy” from brake dust and winter grit. Push pistons out slightly, clean the sides, then lubricate with a tiny amount of mineral oil so both retract evenly.
  • Creeping / soft lever: Typically an incomplete bleed or old fluid. Heavy users benefit from more regular bleeds for consistent bite point on long descents.
  • Heat management: For long, steep descents or heavier riders, choose higher heat-stability compounds and complete a full bed-in for consistent lever feel.
