Workshop Notes — Shimano XTR 2-Piston (BR-M9100)

  • Noise & squeal: Most issues are rotor contamination or uneven piston retraction. Clean rotors with isopropyl, re-centre the caliper and bed pads in fully.
  • Rotor rub / uneven wear: One piston can become “lazy” from brake dust and grit. Push pistons out slightly, clean around the piston edges, then lubricate with a tiny amount of mineral oil.
  • Lever feel: If bite point changes after a pad swap, it’s usually air or old fluid. A proper bleed restores a firm, repeatable bite point.
  • Heat management: For long descents or heavier riders, choose higher heat-resistance compounds and complete a full bed-in for consistent braking.
