Why some curves stop earlier

Each test run stopped when the measured caliper temperature reached 120°C, the stopping threshold used to protect the piston seals in this test setup. The horizontal axis shows rotor temperature. Sintered’s shorter curve means the caliper reached the limit at a lower rotor temperature.

About this test

This chart compares braking power for bedded-in pads, all tested with the Shimano XT RT86 rotor. The horizontal axis shows rotor temperature (°C); the vertical axis shows braking power (W). Each curve represents the compound and backing-plate configuration named in the selector. Compare curves within their plotted ranges; no result is shown beyond the end of a curve.

Follow the Factory Racing Green curve for the Hard compound. In the Shimano XT RT86 rotor comparison, its highest plotted output was approximately 1,010 W. Values are approximate reconstructions from the supplied graph. This result describes the tested pad and rotor setup, not a maximum power rating or a fitment test.

Test context: All pads shown can be good choices for their intended use when correctly matched to the bike and rotor, installed and bedded in. A lower or shorter curve does not by itself make a pad a poor everyday choice. Real riding temperatures depend on the route, total load, braking technique and setup; this test does not establish a temperature limit for the average rider. We have been using Gorilla brakes for sometime and always been very happy with the products supplied. With my last order I incorrectly ordered a set of Sintered pads for our MTB E-Bikes before leaveing for a tour of the UK. Because you previously ran our Enduro Pro Semi-Metallic pads successfully, your rotors have a layer of semi-metallic material embedded in the metal. Sintered pads require a completely clean surface; when they press into old semi-metallic residue, they vibrate violently and cause severe noise and poor performance. They also require a very aggressive bed-in process to work quietly. We want to make this right immediately so you can enjoy your travels. I have sent a private email to your inbox so we can arrange to get the right pads back on your bikes. Safe travels!

Not my first pair of semi metallic pads from Gorilla Brakes. Ideal pads for my style of riding, good compromise between sintered and organic pads plenty of bite without wet weather squealing you can get with sintered pads.Good value and prompt delivery.

Brake pads work really well on my E-Bike. Only thing I find is they are a bit squeaky even on brand new discs. Otherwise perfect

Thanks for the great review, really pleased to hear the pads are working well on your E-Bike.

The squeaking is usually caused by vibration resonance rather than the pad itself. Even with brand new discs this can happen, especially before the pads and rotors have fully bedded in. E-Bikes also put a lot more load and heat through the braking system, which can make any small amount of vibration more noticeable.

It’s worth making sure the rotors are completely clean, the calipers are centred correctly and then giving the pads a good bedding-in cycle. In most cases the noise will reduce considerably once the pad and rotor surfaces have properly matched.
