Workshop Notes — Shimano 105

  • Best use: fast road riding, training, sportives and year-round UK riding.
  • Noise issues: Most brake noise on 105 systems is not pad-related. It’s usually caused by rotor contamination or pistons sticking and not retracting evenly.
  • Uneven bite point: Seized or partially seized pistons can cause uneven pad contact. Check for corrosion around the piston, signs of fluid leaks, and ensure the pistons move freely before fitting new pads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Shimano 105 disc brakes squealing after fitting new pads?
Brake squeal on Shimano 105 is usually caused by rotor contamination, uneven piston retraction, or improper bed-in — not the pad compound itself. Clean the rotor with isopropyl alcohol, check pistons move evenly, re-centre the caliper and complete a full bed-in process.
Which brake pad compound is best for Shimano 105 in wet UK conditions?
For wet winter riding, sintered (metallic) or semi-metallic compounds provide better durability and fade resistance. Resin pads offer quieter braking but wear faster in gritty conditions.
Why does my Shimano 105 lever feel uneven after a pad change?
An uneven bite point is often caused by sticking or partially seized pistons. Check for corrosion around the pistons and ensure they retract evenly before installing new pads.
